Dolby Laboratories

Dolby develops audio and imaging technologies used in entertainment, with a business centred on licensing technology and patents to other companies.

Where do Dolby technologies appear?

Dolby's portfolio includes Dolby Atmos for audio, Dolby Vision for imaging and Dolby Cinema for premium theatrical presentation. The company works with creators, developers and businesses across films, television, music, sport and games. Its role is to provide technologies and systems that support these experiences, rather than to own every film, recording or device carrying the Dolby brand. [1] [2]

How does the licensing model work?

Dolby's annual report separates branded technology licensing from patent licensing. Branded licences can cover software, patents, technical knowledge and use of the Dolby name, principally for device manufacturers. Patent licensing also involves shared patent pools for standardised audio and video technologies. Dolby Cinema adds another arrangement: the company typically supplies technology to exhibitors and receives a share of box-office receipts. These relationships explain why its entertainment exposure differs from that of a film studio or cinema chain. [2]
